Many Southerners lament the coming of winter, but we can almost all agree on one of the most important benefits: fewer bugs! While you will certainly see less of them outside, you may actually start seeing more of them within as the weather gets cooler. Keep reading for more information!
Pests in the house during the winter
Most people spend more time indoors during the winter. With less outdoor activities, colder temperatures and the sun setting earlier, it’s not hard to imagine why! But while you retreat to your home for warmth, some pests do the exact same thing.
There are many species of pests that cannot handle the cold weather. Some of them become dormant, but some seek shelter elsewhere to wait out the cold months. Your home just happens to be the perfect shelter! If you’ve noticed a lot of pests outside your home during the fall, it’s likely that they’ve managed to find a way inside for the winter.
Pests lead to more pests!
The bad news (besides pests in the house) is that these bugs finding their way inside can attract even more bugs. For example, Asian lady beetles actually release pheromones that let other pests know exactly where they are.
Food & Water
Besides being a cozy haven for pests, your home also has other things they need to survive. Just like people, most pests need moisture and food to survive – and your home just happens to have those things! Damp areas of your home such as basements or bathrooms will attract bugs, as well as left over food, crumbs or dishes with food on them.
Hit a ride
Some pests don’t sneak into your home – they’re just waiting for you to carry them in! Whether it’s through those holiday decorations that have been sitting in your garage or shed or your weekly grocery shopping, many pests will make a run and then stay for the winter.
Year round guests
There are a few species of pests that you will find in your home during the winter, as well as all other seasons. Pests like spiders can be a nuisance any month of the year! If you see them in the winter, chances are they have been living with you for some time.
Common winter pests to watch out for
Spiders, ladybugs, box bugs, stink bugs and cockroaches can all scare you this winter. Don’t count on them just going away—as mentioned earlier, seeing them in the winter doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll go away. spring!
