Shirley A. Carpenter, age 85, formerly of Concordia, KS, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at Hillsboro Community Hospital, Hillsboro, KS. She was born at home on January 19, 1937 in Randalia, Fayette County, Iowa to Chester True & Alice Winifred (Treat) Hall.

She graduated from Neola High School in 1955. She married H. Corvon Carpenter on September 2, 1956 in Neola, Iowa. They moved to Concordia, KS from Omaha, NE on November 9, 1963 when Corvon started the Schendel Pest Control Company. He preceded her on October 10, 2003. Shirley was for many years the bookkeeper for Schendel Plaagbeheer and later the corporate bookkeeper for Bon Marche. She eventually started her own business, Payroll Plus, in 1990. She served as secretary and treasurer for the First Presbyterian Church until her retirement.

Shirley took the greatest pleasure in making others feel special; one way was by creating more than 300 personalized birthday cards a year for four decades for immediate and extended family and friends. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, PEO Chapter EV and Eastern Star where she was active and served in various officer roles throughout her life. She volunteered as treasurer for Arion township. Shirley and Corvon had a passion for raising dogs, especially Alaskan Malamutes, and other breeds. They were instrumental in starting Sing Out Cloud County.

She is survived by her children, Sheri Parker (Rick), Moundridge, KS; Connie Markovich (Brian), Paola, KS; Randall Carpenter (Stephanie), Moundridge, KS; & Corliss English (Ted), Topeka, KS; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean Leonhart, Cheyenne, WY & Kelly Piepmeier, Cookeville, TN & a brother, David Hall, Austin, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Corvon; her parents; a grandson, Mark Bledsoe & a brother, Robert Hall.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 29, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church, Concordia with Pastor Bob Frasier officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Visitation with the family will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Friday, July 29, 2022 at the church.
