Summer may be barbecue season, but most Alabama residents know that outdoor activities are much more comfortable in the fall! The weather is still warm, but not sweltering, and there aren’t quite as many bugs out. But there are some! Keep reading for some expert tips for pest-proof backyard barbecues this fall.
Keep the bugs away
Not only are bugs annoying: Some can cause damage and carry diseases. You don’t want them anywhere near your outdoor fun this fall, so follow these steps!
Start spraying
When it comes to keeping pests away, the sooner you start, the better! Ideally, you’ll want to start spraying your garden for bugs in early spring. That might sound like overkill, but if you live in Alabama, you probably know it’s not. It shouldn’t take up too much of your time either. Spray thoroughly around your outdoor area about once every three months.
Spray strategically
One of the biggest pest problems we face in the South is mosquitoes! Sometimes it seems like nothing can be done to keep these annoying pests away – but there is. Spraying them regularly will go a long way in preventing and keeping them at bay. An expert tip? Spray earlier in the morning or later in the evening for best results. Also make sure you get rid of or cover any standing water you have in your garden – that’s where they like to lay their eggs!
Do you have ants?
Unfortunately, spraying your garden will not do much against these pests! They are smart enough to avoid the poison, so you will have to attack this problem at the source. Using ant-specific baits is your best bet. The ants will take the poison back to their colony, leading to better, more permanent results.
Stinging insects
The first step in getting rid of stinging insects is to find out what kind you are dealing with. Wasps can be very dangerous and should be handled by a professional. Important pollinators, such as bees, must not being killed—but there are many ways to keep them away from your outdoor fun. Plants like lemongrass and peppermint will naturally repel them, as will certain scents like citronella (which you can buy in candle form) and lavender. Remember that bees are not attracted to the smell of people, so if you see them buzz around them don’t try to harm you.
